LOTR: Living On The Run is a collaborative blog by friends Wen Li (The Running Artist), Lee Fong (The Fitness Guy), Cris (The Foodie) and Wendy (The Traveller), putting their passions and expertise into a little project aimed at sharing useful information on things that matter to runners, beginner or experienced, and to people who love the outdoors generally.
You’ll find that our style is a little different. Rather than race or event ‘reports’, we prefer to think of our posts as ‘stories’, taking the reader through the experience and raising hot topics for discussion where they arise.
You’ll find, in this blog:
- Stories On The Run: Regular ramblings on running, running gear, race stories, tongue-in-cheek posts on running and motherhood, and more! Our travel correspondent Wendy brings the stories on runs outside Malaysia.
- Running Routes: A little archive of running routes mostly in the Klang Valley (i.e. the area in the vicinity of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where we reside), for the reference of anyone wishing to try a route in a certain area or of a particular distance.
- Eating On The Run: Diabolical (but easy-to-make) recipes with healthy everyday ingredients for a boost to your running regime
- Fitness On The Run: A lowdown on the mechanics of running, and fitness tips [Coming soon]
- #TheRealArtOfRunning: Features original art and comic drawings by Wen Li on matters related to, well, living on the run!
- Links to Running Toons – a comic strip on running co-founded by Wen Li, together with fitness coach/sports writer Gus Ghani.
- ‘Like’ our Facebook page to get a regular dose of our blog updates, and curated links on running and fitness in general!
So, grab a granola bar and enjoy the circuit!
The Running Artist
Wen Li (speedshuffle) runs wherever the road takes her, come scorching sunshine, stifling humidity or relentless rain (and preferably to a Nasi Lemak breakfast!). She believes that running is about empowering oneself and realising one’s true potential – of being able to do things one never thought were possible.
She started running in a bid to stay active after recovering from kneecap dislocations. Not thinking that running was even remotely possible with ‘bad knees’, one of her proudest moments in running was when she hit her first 10K mark, after months of researching and training on running injury-free. She has gone on to run regularly, including during pregnancy (with her doctor’s approval!).
Her running story was featured in Marie Claire Malaysia’s April 2016 issue alongside several other notable women running bloggers.
Wen Li has also practiced pilates for over 7 years, and finds drawing also a great way to pen her thoughts, as an alternative to writing. She is the Co-Founder and Cartoonist of Malaysia’s first comic strip on running, Running Toons. (If you’re interested in her art, do also visit her art portfolio website!) She is also a brand ambassador for Compressport.

The Fitness Guy
Lee Fong is an American Council on Exercise-certified Personal Trainer, and a Barefoot Training Specialist certified by the EBFA (Evidence Based Fitness Academy, US). Formerly a personal trainer based at a Petaling Jaya (Selangor, Malaysia) branch of one of the South-East Asian region’s major fitness/gym chains, Lee Fong is a freelance personal trainer specialising in weight management and strength & conditioning.
Before venturing into the fitness industry, Lee Fong spent several years in sports event management (and would have been a familiar sight on the routes of major running events in the country). LOTR’s strapping, unassuming fitness guy has a degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Malaya, so we think he probably knows what he’s talking about.. 😉
Cris (mainhantamcook), runner, foodie and avid experimental cook, specialises in whipping up delicious meals at a moment’s notice, and brims with food ideas ranging from cooking for one (herself) to feeding hungry hordes (she loves parties!). Cris is passionate about preparing healthy, delicious meals that doesn’t take hours of slaving over the stove, tons of exotic ingredients or recipes that are longer than a page.
While Cris sees herself as a rebel in the kitchen, don’t be fooled by her blog handle, ‘main hantam’ (mah-yin hun-tahm, colloquial Malay meaning to attempt something in a slapdash style). Far from being slapdash, she has a knack for substituting hard-to-get ingredients with everyday kitchen staples that yield similar, if not superior, results. (PS. We love her Oven-Toasted Granola Laced with Agave Nectar!)

Wendy (wateroxie) unexpectedly fell in love with running outdoors after accepting a 10K run entry challenge five years ago. In her dreams, Wendy runs as fast as the hare. In reality, she is hamstrung by tight hamstrings and thus destined to run more like the plodding Water Ox of her Chinese Horoscope (hence WaterOxie!).
Running has brought her many good friends, good food (especially post-run breakfasts), community and adventures to the WaterOxie’s life. She also enjoys runcations which allow her to combine a love of travel and running. (PS. We also love Wendy for her adept organising skills and her gift for motivating her runner friends. One doesn’t have to be a hare to be a runner! 😉 )
